City of the Future/Atlanta Exhibition

Opening Reception
The national competition offered teams of architects, engineers, and students the opportunity to develop inventive visions of Atlanta 100 years from now. Entrants presented written statements, visual displays, and 3-dimensional constructs, all assembled within three hours at Underground Atlanta on January 29, 2008. Project summaries and images of the temporary public installations were then posted on www.history.com/cityofthefuture where the National City of the Future Champion was determined based on the results of a public online vote.

Re/constructing Atlanta Book Release Book Signing + Reception
This exhibition of entries from the History Channel’s City of the Future / Atlanta Design and Engineering Challenge competition provides a significant context for the release of Re/constructing Atlanta, a 120-page book featuring essays by Ellen Dunham-Jones, Cathy Byrd, Ryan Gravel and Mtamanika Youngblood, along with real and imagined views of Atlanta’s contemporary redevelopment.

Urban Intervention: The Beltline

Centering on the evolving Beltline transportation initiative, Urban Intervention engaged local artists and architects in experiential projects. Participants were Danielle Roney and Ryan Gravel (culture), Joan Tysinger (access), the Dirty Truth Campaign, with Brian Hawkins and Lisa Tuttle (activism), Pandra Williams (greenspace), Ed Akins, with David Green (sustainability) and Amy Landesberg (public space), as well as photosofthebeltline.com, an interactive website project directed by Ruth Dusseault.

Atlanta Youth Re-imagine the City
Youth Art Connection Gallery
In collaboration with the Education Department of the Museum of Design Atlanta and art departments at Grady High School, Tri-Cities High School and South Atlanta School of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Building Our Beautiful City presented images, maquettes and installations that explore Atlanta’s creative potential. This teenage art project grew from MODA’s A City of Neighborhoods high school outreach program.

This outdoor screening featured short videos by artist Gordon Matta-Clark that documented his anarchic urban interventions from the 1970s. Also included in the screenings were rare video footage of the Atlanta art collective Public and Private, Manfred Kirchheimer’s “Stations of the Elevated” and a new poetic video portrait of Atlanta by Blake Williams. Presented by Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Frequent Small Meals and the GSU Welch School Gallery.

On October 25, Ellin took part in a public conversation about her impressions of Atlanta’s new growth at the GSU Welch School of Art and Design. Co-sponsored by the Georgia Tech College of Architecture and the GSU Welch School of Art & Design Gallery, with the GSU College of Arts and Sciences Visiting Artists and Scholars program.
